Annual Earth Day Walk – 2026 – Four Revolutions

cellar hole
Beautifully preserved large cellar hole at Pigeon Swamp Preserve, a Joshua’s Trust Property in Lebanon, CT. We will visit this on the trip and use it to celebrate James Hutton’s “Theory of the Earth.”

EACH YEAR on Earth Day, I guide a hike for Joshua’s Trust, an important land trust in northeastern Connecticut to which I belong and contribute.  All are considered scholarly engagement from the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Connecticut, in part because each year I read an excerpt from the founding document of geology, Jame’s Hutton’s Theory of the Earth, published in Edinburgh Scotland during the years of the American Revolution.

This year, we meet at the “War Office” at the southwestern corner of the town green in Lebanon, CT.  I’ve created a PDF electronic handout JT Earth Day 2026 for those who would like to mindfully prepare for the hike in advance and (or) follow along on their phones during the hike.
