Leadership
2025-Present: The Thoreau Alliance, Chair, Committee on Nominations and Elections. I oversaw a historic membership vote by The Thoreau Society to merge with the Thoreau Farm Trust to create the Thoreau Alliance, an umbrella organization.
2022-present: The Thoreau Society, Board of Directors (elected). Second 3-year term. I previously chaired its Committee on Collections and now chair its Committee on Nominations and Elections. I am an advisory editor for its scholarly journal The Concord Saunterer.
2017-present: Connecticut Center for the Book (a Library of Congress affiliate). Chair of its Nonfiction Jury for multiple terms. Temporarily on hold.
2011-2012: Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vice President. The bylaws require that the President be at Yale in New Haven.
1987-1988: Geological Society of America – Geoarchaeology Division, Chairman – Denver, CO.
1986-1997: Connecticut State Museum of Natural History. Board Member and Secretary.
1986-1988 Connecticut Low-Level Radioactive Waste Advisory Committee, Connecticut Hazardous Waste Management Service,Vice Chair in charge of the technical siting process.
1982-1984 Alaska Quaternary Center, University of Alaska. Founding director.
