OXFORD LANGUAGES defines scholarship as “academic study or achievement,” making it broader than the noun research, which they define as “the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.” In describing myself, I prefer the term scholarship over research because it is both broader and more flexible. My work as a STEM scientist is clearly research. My work as a scholar of environmental humanities is less clearly research because it mainly involves synthetic and rhetorical writing.
