Epilogue

Midway through this project, I visited Thoreau’s headstone in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where his body rests in the “familiar” warm sands of a glacial delta that built outward into a freshwater sea.   His gravesite in Sleepy Hollow, and his house-site at Walden Pond occur in comparable geological settings.

Simple marble gravestone

Simple marble gravestone of Henry David Thoreau at Sleepy Hollow.  The grave is adorned by Nature with splattered mud, and with rock, pines, and pencils, all of which he dearly loved. Whoever placed the rose there is making a sentimental gesture.
